When the Google trademark lawyers came calling you would think, like many of those before her she would back down and turn tail. She did counteroffer the domains at a discounted rate, these offers could have been her demise, because when she actually went to court her actual defense was ingenious.

The domain poacher told the court she had been planning a dating site and the domain was intended as "Go Ogle" rather than "Google". To make this even more effective, you should add hyphens in the domain name. For instance, if your specialty is blind salamanders, then something like “www.blind-salamanders.com” would be as effective as you get in terms of using keywords in the domain name. Search engines see hyphenated words as different words. On the contrary, non-hyphenated words are seen as one word. Here lies the dilemma: Hyphenated domain names are best for SEO, but they look somewhat awkward to people. Non-hyphenated domains look professional, but aren’t as effective as the hyphenated ones. This is because, despite the credit squeeze, the search sector is growing rapidly.

Recession, it seems, happens to other industries - the rise in search marketing budgets is so inevitable that even with a slow or fall in economic growth, the sector continues to expand.

I am not even offering you anecdotal evidence. Research published by Jeffries and Company warns tough economic times are causing marketers to reconsider their online marketing budgets.

However, it suggests marketers are not looking to reduce their budgets but to ensure their money works as hard as possible.

“More and more advertisers are allocating a greater level of their budgets to more performance-oriented channels, particularly search, and away from brand building formats such as display and sponsorships,” the report states.

As budgets falter, many marketers are under pressure to justify both their spending and their jobs to employers, and a search marketing campaign could be the way to do that.

Jeffries argues search works because it is performance-based, offers clear returns and those returns are excellent.

In a difficult economic period, companies cannot simply bury their heads and wait for it all to go away, there has to be some marketing activity to keep them in the minds of their customers.

With effective search marketing, a firm can carefully control the amount it spends and generate business despite the slump.

Search Marketing

SEO and SEM are intertwined for a few years. some people even define SEO as a sub-discipline of SEM. While I prefer SEM to refer to paid search (PPC etc.) the term has morphed to search marketing recently. You rarely say “SEM” by now. Not only the term gained traction, the approach did too. Search marketing dropped the “engine” as it’s about reaching out to people who search, be it on search engines, static websites (Adsense!) or social media. You don’t need strictly an engine to search. You need a search marketer to help you perform on the various media and platforms though. This term ist the most popular right now as describing the whole industry.

Web Design for ROI

Web Design for ROI is a highly influential book that basically, like the findability concept, re-contextualizes SEO along the lines of larger business objectives. These get translated via web design and information architecture in order to realign them in favor of higher returns instead of “good looks”. While it’s not a term that realy caught on it really describes what SEO nowadays is about. PageRank, rankings and traffic are not enough as return on investment is key. The concept is already widely accepted and I’d love people to use a short version of the term like ROI design or something. Is advanced the new better SEO or just a part of it like basic SEO? I don’t know, the pundits do not even agree on what advanced SEO really is. It certainly has something to do with programming and web analytics, examples like “ip delivery” and “ROI analysis” get mentioned in this context. Some bloggers dispute that advanced SEO is another term for “black hat SEO” but there has been no final agreement reached on this

Findability

Findability is a concept stemming rather from the web development community and usability experts. It’s almost all encompassing and covers not only SEO aspects of web design. It also reflects off site factors and new developments like social media. It’s been revived recently but it didn’t catch on as much as I’d expect yet. Findability is a great term for all those who struggle to explain SEO again and again. Findability is kind of self-explanatory due to the non-acronym nature of the term.

Contentious Search: Google, Religion and Freedom of Speech

Google has reversed a decision which saw it previously refuse to carry paid search adverts for a pro-life Christian group when the searcher types in “abortion”.

The Christian Institute, the group in question, (which must have received greater levels of traffic over this event than it ever has before because of this story) approached the search engine earlier this year requesting paid adspace.

Google refused, on the grounds that its policy on paid search advertising prevents it from mixing religion and abortion content.

Tricky. The group responded by asserting its free speech rights had been affected, noting that the search engine allowed advertising from abortion clinics and pro-choice websites which criticised religion.

Now Google has agreed to display these adverts, pledging to allow a “level playing field”.

A spokesperson said: “The issue of abortion is an emotive subject and Google does not take a particular side.”

Whatever your opinions on abortion or indeed any contentious issue, the search engine must exercise some editorial control regarding contentious subjects in order to protect its reputation.

To pick an extreme example, it could not place an advert for the BNP without provoking a storm of criticism (for our US readers, the BNP is a far right UK political party). Having said that, I have never seen a political advert, though, so perhaps it is avoiding politics altogether.

Then I began to ponder what contentious issues Google would carry adverts for. A search for “personality test” did not throw up any paid search results for the Scientologists.

However, a search for “scientology” or “L Ron Hubbard” brings up sponsored links for the religion many people consider to be a dangerous cult.

To be fair to Google, if it were to decide on a moral code and impose that upon its paid ads, it would be essentially forcing those principles upon the millions of people using its service.

It might seem fine to me to ban certain subjects from receiving additional visibility, but then many people could disagree. It would be problematic, maybe even downright wrong for the engine to inflict its views on people, even if the alternative is to give page time to contentious areas.

Currently, there are demonstrations against Google and Microsoft taking place in India.

This is because they have been carrying paid ads for tests which claim to inform expectant mothers what sex their unborn babies are, although they have both now ceased to do so.

India has issues with female babies being terminated and has outlawed products which purport to tell the parent what gender they are carrying.

How difficult must it be for a company this big to keep on top of local moral stance and law? Yet clearly it must do so - its corporate reputation would be harmed if it encouraged locally illegal behaviour - imagine if a search engine began advertising rabbit guns to British teens!

It is not just search portals that can be accused of bad practice. Earlier this year, Justin Williams, the assistant editor of the Telegraph Media Group, slammed the Guardian for buying sponsored links for the keywords “Madeleine McCann”.

“There is no phrase too sensitive, no taste that is too poor … apparently,” he sneered.

Where an organisation buys its adspace can clearly affect its reputation, just as it could potentially harm the search engine or website displaying the promotion.

I think what interests me about the entire debate is that these are issues few people could have predicted in the early stages of search. It makes me wonder how Google, or any organisation which publishes advertising, will retain its moral stance when ethics are personal and localised but the internet has no borders.

The Perils of Percentages

I decided to work with percentages rather than actual pounds and pence for two reasons; client confidentiality and because there is such a massive variation in budgets and CPC’s across the selected accounts. Considering percentage variations means that a £10 error on an account spending £1000/day counts less than for one on a spend of £10/day. But you knew that already, didn’t you?

One side effect of this is that, particularly on a graph, it looks like the lower estimates are a lot more accurate then the upper estimates. However, this is because the lower estimate is never less than zero so it can never be more than 100% different from the actual value.

Are Asda, Tesco & Johnson’s Complete Lift cream, only to have the Advertising Standards Agency ban its advertising a few days later for being “misleading”.

The watchdog was responding to complaints by the public that the £17.99 50 ml pot contained small print which stated it offered “no physical lift”.

Despite this, my anonymous friend said she is going to keep using it “just in case” because it can’t hurt to hope.

Now, I don’t want you to think that I spend my spare time obsessing over search engine optimisation (SEO), so let’s say I began thinking about spin, skin and search the next day.

A variety of studies and advertising bans have debunked most of the anti-wrinkle creams on the market as being pretty ineffective when it comes to turning back the clock.

Good for the skin they may be but none can simply smooth away wrinkles yet an astounding number of people buy them anyway.

Now, SEO works. Not for wrinkles, obviously, I mean in its own field it works. As a marketing technique, it increases targeted traffic, raises visibility and enhances the status of brands.

Despite this, optimisation has a terrible reputation.

If the public know about SEO at all, they often think of that terrible word “manipulation”.

SEO is often thought of as entirely black hat, a way of subjugating the usual search engine quality controls in order to present the searcher with marketing copy and nothing useful.

This is so unfair! How come a product which admits on its own packaging that it does not do what you hope it does, continues to sell in the thousands but there are businesses out there which are not investing in search marketing and optimisation?

I think there will always be great spin on some products and enthusiastic consumers to buy them, meaning wrinkle cream will not stop selling.

However, I like to think that SEO will lose its negative reputation and become recognised as the positive, consumer-friendly marketing tactic it is as increasing firms enjoy the great results it offers

Control the Double Agent

Always remember that SpyFu works both ways; while you’re using it to spy on your competitors, they are using it to spy on you. Most things I’ve read say it’s only redone every 60-90 days. Spend a lot when SpyFu does its update and you’ll appear to be spending that much for the next three months. Take these update figures with a pinch of salt; I can’t find anything official about this and quite a few blog posts about SpyFu appear quite biased against it.

When is SpyFu’s next database update due? I don’t know. It is also possible that their data gathering goes on all the time but they only do their calculations every three months. If this is the case then this method won’t work. Unfortunately I think this probably is the case.

Bid on the Long Tail

Bid on the long tail of a really expensive keyword. SpyFu even published a list of the most expensive keywords to make this easier for you. The idea here is to use the way SpyFu lumps long tail searches together in order to convince them that your CPC is huge. For example top of their top list is “conference calling companies” at $52 a pop. As I’ve said, I’ve never seen a four word keyword in SpyFu so try bidding on something like “free conference calling companies.” The term “free” is common enough that SpyFu will probably scrape for it so their algorithm should record you bidding on “conference calling companies” but your actual CPC will be lower because people will bid less for the word “free.”

Of course the algorithm might decide to cut your keyword down to “free conference calling” instead so you should bid on a variety of “x conference calling companies” to make sure your long tail is shortened to the keywords with the maximum CPC.

Bid High

SpyFu do not know what your click through rates are. They calculate daily spend on an estimated daily spend for a given keyword which is probably based on an average CTR depending on the ad position. So if you use a high traffic keyword with and bid enough that your ad gets a good position then SpyFu think you are spending a lot of money. But what if your ad text was so bland that the real CTR was incredibly low? No one can accurately predict the CPC for an ad without knowing how the quality score system works. I’m sure SpyFu has the technology and capacity to scrape landing pages as well as search results; they can then apply their own quality score algorithm but I can’t imagine their results are very accurate.

The AdWords API has a service that will estimate CPC for a given keyword but I doubt SpyFu use it: The API service is designed to be accurate when it can access campaign and ad group quality scores for the account it is being used for; this information will not be available for SpyFu.

Counting the Cost

The accuracy of the daily cost estimate for each keyword is a tricky one. If they work it out by considering an average CPC for each keyword multiplied by an estimated number of clicks then their accuracy depends not only on their CPC estimates (see below) but also their estimates of CTR’s. Since all this is done by a computer CTR estimates will depend only on ad position and not on the ad copy which the folks at the Mind Valley Labs tell us can make a massive difference.

Ignoring the Long Tail

The example that SpyFu gives for eliminating overlapping keywords is clearly far too restrictive; I doubt they would lump “race cars” and “luxury cars” into “cars” but you rarely see three word keywords whilst using SpyFu and, personally, I’ve never seen a four word one. If your ad appears on one of the first few SERPs for a term then they will know about it and have a record of it, unless the term is relatively unusual. This is why estimates are better for accounts with a large number of impressions; such accounts either bid on lots of relatively common terms that will be scraped by SpyFu or they bid on a few very general terms which are also covered. Accounts that bid on lots of low traffic, long tail keywords might not get picked up at this stage so SpyFu will not have very good data on them

Start Leaving Comments

Last but definitely not least in the list is to start leaving comments on other blogs. The follow-up to this post is going to look at all the various ways to find the top sites in a niche, there are more than you would expect. I’ve watched bloggers like Sean, Avani, Alex and Evelyn seriously increase traffic and activity on their sites by being very active on the blogs of others. I recommend commenting on other blogs for a number of reasons:

* Small amount of traffic from the site you comment on
* Increase branding & niche exposure (think: gravatar)
* Site authors are much more likely to link to your posts
* It helps establish a relationship with an author, this can definitely be helpful if you need their assistance in the future

As they always say, you can have the greatest content in the world but if you aren’t active online or promoting your articles in some way then nobody is going to see them. These steps are very simple but can also be very effective to get your brand out there and start promoting your new website.

Register on StumbleUpon

Once again with StumbleUpon, I like to keep the branding and avatar theme running so whenever I sign-up or recommend others, I tell them to use either a personal name or site name for their username. Secondly, use the same image that has been used elsewhere as your avatar. Now then, there are 2 things you want to do with your StumbleUpon account: 1. Set-up your interests so you can find a lot of relevant content and 2. Stumble the blog posts of fellow niche bloggers and let them know about it in their commentsFor all the bloggers in your niche you find on the site, make sure you add them as a friend. You’ll typically find they link to their profile on their own blog, or they are always reviewing pages from their own website. When you add them make sure that you send a personal message which includes their name and ask them to add you as a friend. This can be time consuming if there are a lot of SU users in this niche but it is definitely worth the effort. Once you have started to build up your network you can help spread the traffic to others in your niche and even make use of the ‘Send-to’ function whenever you write a post of your own. One more thing I do on StumbleUpon is message all the people that thumb-up one of my personal posts. I thank them for taking the time to check out the site and also ask them to do a friend exchange. Once again, this is time consuming but it is a nice personal touch and anything to help increase traffic to your new website is a bonus.

Sign-Up to Gravatar

This one is relatively simple but it is definitely effective for branding and comment traffic. Gravatars are the avatars that show up next to comments on many blogs (this is increasing all the time) and is built by the same team that builds Wordpress. Gravatar works by assigning your email address to a picture, so whenever you post a comment with a certain email, your picture will appear next to it. I’m very big on branding so I keep this the same as the avatar on Twitter and MyBlogLog.

Register on Twitter

About one year ago I wouldn’t have recommended this, even though the service was around. This is mostly due to the fact that Twitter had quite a varied audience and people didn’t really think to use it to promote a website. These days however, Twitter is an excellent way to drive traffic to a site and build your name in a niche, especially with their now huge userbase. After you’ve registered on Twitter1 make sure you fill out your profile2 and use the same avatar as MyBlogLog. This is important for branding purposes and it’s also going to set you out from most users of the site. Note that people are more likely to notice your tweets (status updates) via your picture rather than your username. Once you’re all set-up you need to start adding people to follow3 and interact with from the niche of your site. If you are passionate about your niche then the discussions these people are having should interest you. There are multiple ways to find a relevant audience:

Utilise MyBlogLog

If you’ve never heard of MyBlogLog (where have you been?) then I’ll give you a quick run down. Basically, MyBlogLog is a Yahoo owned community based around your blog and its readers. When you sign-up you get to fill out your profile1 and even register your community2 which is for readers of your blog to show support. You’ll notice that any fans of your blog who are already on MBL are likely to register as part of your community. MBL also offer blog statistics, I used to use them a while ago but because of a few issues in the service i.e. some people could appear as Shoemoney when visiting sites, so I lost a bit of trust in them. My favourite part of MyBlogLog is that whenever you visit a site with their ‘visitors’ widget’, your profile is going to be shown3. Therefore, it is important to pick a relevant username and a memorable avatar. This is excellent for branding and you’ll also notice a few people checking out your profile on the site.

Contextual Advertising

Every company needs to make marketing decisions in the areas of segmentation, product offerings, pricing, distribution and promotion. Its a great tool to see both how competitive a certain phrase is and to review the types of messages that are being used by others.

There's two ways that you can get to this capability:

1. Click on the "More sponsored links" link at the bottom of the ads being displayed on Google

2. Go to this link - www.google.com/sponsoredlinks

From here, you can enter your keywords and see an indication of the number of competing ads... for example, the are about 319 ads available for the keyword in the example above. So this is a fairly interesting view of all ads that Google would consider showing for a particular keyword.

Note that the order in which these are displayed are different from the main Google algorithm. In fact, Google's help page states that:

Dynamic URLs and Search Engine Optimisation

There has been a lot of talk recently about the use of Dynamic URLs and their impact on the Search Engine Optimisation of a website.

Google recently blogged about the use of dynamic URLs and they recommend that rewriting URLs is not needed to enhance your rankings in Search Engines and help the Googlebot to crawl your site more efficiently.

In this Blog Google stats the following reasons for not rewriting your URLs

Dynamic URLs can be crawled by Googlebot so there is no need - Google states that when it reads dynamic URLs, the Googlebot gleans useful information about the content.
The rewriting process can create more problems than it solves
If you want to present static URLs then they should have static content on them.

Search engine marketing set to grow and grow

According to PricewaterhouseCoopers (using data from the Advertising Association) spending on Search by UK businesses is set to rise by 30% this year- that's compared with the 20% predicted for the whole internet advertising sector.

It is unclear whether this covers paid search alone, organic/SEO, banner ads, affiliates etc. or a blended approach- although the fact that they compare "Search" to "internet advertising" suggests that they're referring to SEO.

I think PwC must have been scrutinising the Advertising Association’s Advertising Statistics Yearbook 2008, but can't find any definite evidence. Now that I understand technologies and marketing better I can share what I know about computers and building business with others. As an SEO my main mission is to get rankings, traffic and improve web-generated business.
But I've never forgotten that I have other skills. It's not an ego trip, it's altruistic- the more you know the more you can share, and therefore the better you can make the experience for everyone. This means that you can help others gain confidence, and then they can then go on to share their knowledge around.
What has this got to do with SEO? you may ask. Well, if you only work to a tight SEO remit, not much. But I look at my job as more than just SEO. My job centres on SEO, but it is just as much about giving stuff away. It's kind of open source.

Google Turns 10

Whilst Google ages on past the decade mark, you have to rememeber that Google Adwords has been around for nearly 8 years. Lauched back in October 2000 with just 350 customers, Google Adwords promised keyword targeting and performance feedback. So what's happen since then?
In February 2002 the first major overhaul for Adwords took place with the addition of the new Cost-Per-Click pricing platform. In April 2005 Adwords released Site Targeting as an additional feature giving advertisers the ability to better target their ads to specific content sites. November 2005 saw the release of Google Analytics formerly know as Urchin. Our experience with VISI is documented on this post, “VISI - A Web Hosting Company That Rocks“. The key to success is to create short, concise, entertaining, quality videos that have a wide appeal. A good example of this is Terry Tate: Office Linebacker series put out by Reebok. This video quickly spread virally.

Video Internet Marketing Strategies

1. Linkbait: Place videos on your website and allow others to link to these videos. Hosting these videos on your website will attract links directly to your website.
2. Traffic Driver: Place videos on video sharing sites such as YouTube with links to your site. These links will have no-follow tags so you won’t pick up link popularity. But with YouTube’s estimated 30 million visitors a month, popular videos bring regular traffic to your site.
3. Branding: Visibly include your business name, URL or brand name in the video and allow it to be spread thru the web virally with your video.
4. Video Search: Google displays videos in its search results, particularly from YouTube. Videos on Blinkx will show up on Ask and MSN, among others.

Video File Optimization

1. File name: The file name for the video works very much like a Title Tag does for a web page. Search engines use these for indexing so include target key phrases within the video title.
2. Meta Data: Include information like title, length, keywords, and authorship in the video file encoding.
3. Transcript: When posting on your blog (video blogging) or website, include a transcript of each video to provide keyword rich text for the search engines. This is an ideal way to include anchor text links specific to your key phrases.

Dangers of Medical Blogging

Blogs are being relied upon as a source of healthcare information. But can medical blogging be hazardous to the health of your healthcare career? Physicians and nurses can share their stories and insights. They can also risk revealing confidential patient information. Authors of medblogs need to understand what they can and can’t say

Medical blogging is a way for the medical professional to show their caring and knowledge about medicine. Medblogs are important as a source to learn about disease, treatments and prevention.

So why is there such a controversy about medical blogging? Hospital administrations have shut down physician blogs. The lifespan of a medical blog tends to be short because of HIPPA compliance issues. Bloggers must make sure that if they describe an actual case that they do not use any of the18 health information identifiers noted in the HIPAA regulations.

David D. Perlmutter, a professor in the KU School of Journalism & Mass Communications has put together a Medbloggers’ Hippocratic Oath to help in navigating the special problems that medical blogger face. The following is an excerpt from David Perlmutter’s blog:

I swear that:

1. I will never reveal information about patients in my blog that allows readers to identify them in any way.
2. If I blog under a pseudonym, I will still inform readers of my correct credentials and degrees so that they can assess my expertise.
3. Should it be blogging? MySpace? FaceBook? Setting up a lens on Squidoo?

No… first you need to set up your listening tools to understand what is being said about your company, your brand or your key executives. Before you decide to engage your customers, you need to understand how people are feeling about your brand. What voices are the most influential? Where do you need to have a presence to target where discussions are already happening?

An effective monitoring system allows your company to be proactive and respond to complaints in as little as 15 minutes after they are posted. By actively monitoring social media your company can develop a reputation of reaching out to and helping customers. By reacting quickly to criticism you are more likely to convert complaints into product evangelists.

There are a number tools that do a very good job.

1. What topics that you write are best received? Use the web analytics from your hosting company or use Google Analytics to give you these answers.

Purpose: Before you start measuring success, you need to have a purpose for your blog. Blogs that address a particular audience about a particular topic will build a larger readership. Readers return if they like what they read. If you write about a wide variety of subjects, then you won’t have a chance to develop many repeat visitors.

Feedback: Visitors to your blog give you feedback on what interests them even if they don’t leave comments. When you write something interesting you will see an increase in the number of visitors, the number of comments and even the nature of the comments. If you listen and watch, you can use this to deliver more of the content that your audience likes.

1. Numbers of visitors: If nobody visits your blog then your blog is not effective. If you write a blog posting 3 times a week, which topics or postings created the highest number of visitors? Figure out what you did right and do more of it.
2. Comments: Which postings yielded the highest number of comments and discussion? Was it the subject? Your writing style? Possibly the questions you asked?
3. Length of Stay: How long did your average visitor stay reading your blog? Were they there for 30 seconds or for 5 minutes?
4. Entry Pages: What postings attract visitors over time? These are ones that visitors find on the search engines long after you have written them. These are your reader’s favorites.
5. Location: Where are your readers from? Google Analytics allows you to see not only the country and state, but the city too. This is important if your blog is for a local business.

Results you should expect from blogging

Blogging will get your business noticed online. Blogging opens a whole new realm than you would find with just a website. Blogging is part of the Internet called social media. In web marketing, the call to action and promoting your products is the name of the game. In blog marketing, the goal is to interact and converse with visitors.

Since the goals of blogging are so very different than traditional website marketing, what results should your business expect from blogging?

1. Reach new readers: Blogs reach new readers that are interested. These are usually different than those reading traditional advertising or even your website.
2. Build a following: Build recognition of your company or your products by regularly writing interesting postings in your blog. You will build a following of readers who will know and understand who you are and what you stand for.
3. Inform customers: Do you sell or produce products? Blogs can build your market for these products by getting potential customers to understand how your products can solve some problem that they have. Give case stories of how your products are used.
4. Open up communication: Keep open the lines of communication between your company and your customer. Customer service blogs enable the flow of conversation to travel in both directions and alert you to developing issues
5. Push up your website rankings: Blogs generate regular new keyword rich content. Attract search engine interest by carefully using keywords in your headlines and blog copy. Link generously from your blog to other websites as well as your own. Using keywords in the link text is a powerful method to push up your website rankings.

POST: A Systematic Approach to Social Media Marketing

Filed under: Blog Marketing, Social Media Marketing — Doug Williams @ 4:09 am

What do most companies do wrong when they start marketing with social media? They lack an overall plan. They are missing their objectives. They don’t know who their target audience is? Market research firm Forrester has coined the Acronym POST. The POST method is a planning methodology for companies to enter into social media marketing.

POST helps address “should my company have a presence on Face book?” or “why isn’t anyone reading our company blog?” It is the central concept in the book Groundswell.

The POST method stands for People, Objectives, Strategy, and Technology.

People: This is about reaching your targeted customer. Who are they? What are their interests and their demographics? What types of social media are they most likely to use? If you’re targeting college students, use social networks. If you’re reaching out business travelers, consider ratings and reviews.

Objectives: What do you want to accomplish? Do you want to generate awareness? Influence the influencer? Build or regain trust? Energize your customers to talk about your brand? Decide on your objective before you decide which technology to use. Figure out how you will measure results.

Strategy: Strategy in the POST method means how will things be different afterwards?? Do you want a closer, two-way relationship with your best customers? Do you want to get people talking about your products? Do you want a permanent focus group for testing product ideas and generating new ones?

Technology: After you’ve decided on people, objectives and strategy then decide the best application to use. Should this be blogging, if so, which software? Should you be using w i k is, My Space or You Tube? Perhaps you will want to form a niche community?

Too many businesses start with the Technology. They will start with “we need a blog” or “our company needs a Face book page.” Using the POST method helps remove the guesswork.

Top 10 Viral Marketing campaigns… #10

This is one of the most effective viral/guerrilla marketing campaigns ever. This film cost just $22,000 to produce and grossed $248 million worldwide. This film was in the Guinness Book of World Records for “Top Budget: Box Office Ratio” (for a mainstream feature film).

Viral marketing describes a marketing strategy that encourages individuals to pass on a marketing message to others, creating the potential for exponential and exposure. These are our top 10 picks for the all time best viral marketing campaigns.

The movie: In October 1994, three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland, while shooting a documentary… A year later their footage was found. They had left to film a documentary about the local legend known as Blair Witch.

The result: A couple of young film students created a major movie hit. They accomplished this with almost no budget, with no script, with unknowns acting, directing and producing the movie. And to top it off they used very little film, they used videotape.

How they did it: The marketing behind the Blair Witch Project was powerful. Hale and Monello (the creators of the Blair Witch Project) made us question whether this film was “truth or myth”. To create a buzz they used various Internet sites to feed the audience bits and pieces of the Blair Witch mythology. There were bits and pieces of information such as police reports, and lost pages from the missing student’s diaries.

Although only $22,000 was spent producing the movie, Artisan reportedly spent $10 million on distribution and promotion. This is a small figure by Hollywood standards where $25-30 million is more the norm for high profile films. The Blair Witch Project has become one of the most profitable films in history.

They used Internet hype to help create excitement. Unlike other hit movies, the Internet activity started well before the film’s release. MTV News covered the proliferation of fan sites nearly two months before its July 16 release. There were blogs, fan websites, web boards, and trailer sites. The films website generated 75 million visits the week of the film’s release. Nielson NetRatings listed the official site as the 45th most visited location on the Web for the week ending August 1.

Top 10 Viral Marketing campaigns… #9

This campaign is designed to promote Cadbury Dairy Milk brand chocolate within the United Kingdom and Ireland. This ad was first launched August 31, 2007. A version of the commercial was uploaded to video YouTube and received 500,000 page views in the first week. TellyAds named the Cadbury gorilla commercial the favorite TV ad for 2007 (Britain).

Viral marketing describes a marketing strategy that encourages individuals to pass on a marketing message to others, creating the potential for exponential growth and exposure. This is our #9 pick in our top 10 picks for the all time best viral marketing campaigns.

There is no question that the viral video became wildly popular, but many feel there was little connection to the brand or the product.

Marketing Strategy: According to video creators, the drumming gorilla is an effort to make you smile, in exactly the same way Cadbury Dairy Milk does. The media coverage was so great that this helped explain the ad to the general public! The Gorilla’s drumming is supposed to be “a visual metaphor for the joy of eating a bar of Cadbury’s Dairy Milk”.

The campaign itself was much more than a viral marketing video. It was made up of appearances on billboards, print newspapers and magazines, television and cinema spots, event sponsorships and an internet presence.

After the first or second viewings, many cannot recall what brand name is associated with the video. But British polling company YouGov reported public perception of the brand had noticeably improved in the period following the launch, reversing the decline experienced in the first half of 2007.

Results: Sure, the Cadbury ads are memorable, but do they sell? According to the recent Biggest Brands survey by TBS the Cadbury Dairy Milk lost market share while competitor Galaxy grew 12% over the prior year. So the effectiveness of the campaign is questionable.

100mb web site hosting at rs.500 in chennai

Location: Chennai, Tamil Nadu
Contact Person: Suresh.B Contact Number: 9894598645
We offer 100mb web hosting space at Rs.500 . The information is sorted, sifted, anonymized, counted, and computed, until, finally, we get the traffic rankings shown in the Alexa service.
What is Traffic Rank?

The traffic rank is based on three months of aggregated historical traffic data from millions of Alexa Toolbar users and data obtained from other, diverse traffic data sources, and is a combined measure of page views and users (reach). As a first step, Alexa computes the reach and number of page views for all sites on the Web on a daily basis. The main Alexa traffic rank is based on a value derived from these two quantities averaged over time (so that the rank of a site reflects both the number of users who visit that site as well as the number of pages on the site viewed by those users). The three-month change is determined by comparing the site’s current rank with its rank from three months ago. For example, on July 1, the three-month change would show the difference between the rank based on traffic during the first quarter of the year and the rank based on traffic during the second quarter.
What are sites and Web hosts?

Traffic is computed for sites, which are typically defined at the domain level. For example, the Web hosts www.msn.com, carpoint.msn.com and slate.msn.com are all treated as part of the same site, because they all reside on the same domain, msn.com. An exception is blogs or personal home pages, which are treated separately if they can be automatically identified as such from the URLs in question. Also, sites which are found to be serving the same content (mirrors) are generally counted together as the same site.
What is Reach?

Reach measures the number of users. Reach is typically expressed as the percentage of all Internet users who visit a given site. So, for example, if a site like yahoo.com has a reach of 28%, this means that of all global Internet users measured by Alexa, 28% of them visit yahoo.com. Alexa’s one-week and three-month average reach are measures of daily reach, averaged over the specified time period. The three-month change is determined by comparing a site’s current reach with its values from three months ago.
What are Page Views?

Page views measure the number of pages viewed by site visitors. Multiple page views of the same page made by the same user on the same day are counted only once. The page views per user numbers are the average numbers of unique pages viewed per user per day by the visitors to the site. The three-month change is determined by comparing a site’s current page view numbers with those from three months ago.
How Are Traffic Trend Graphs Calculated?

The Trend graph shows you a three-day moving average of the site’s daily traffic rank, charted over time. The daily traffic rank reflects the traffic to the site based on data for a single day. In contrast, the main traffic rank shown in the Alexa Toolbar and elsewhere in the service is calculated from three months of aggregate traffic data.

Daily traffic rankings will sometimes benefit sites with sporadically high traffic, while the three-month traffic ranking benefits sites with consistent traffic over time. Since we feel that consistent traffic is a better indication of a site’s value, we’ve chosen to use the three-month traffic rank to represent the site’s overall popularity. We use the daily traffic rank in the Trend graphs because it allows you to see short-term fluctuations in traffic much more clearly.

It is possible for a site’s three-month traffic rank to be higher than any single daily rank shown in the Trend graph. On any given day there may be many sites that temporarily shoot up in the rankings. But if a site has consistent traffic performance, it may end up with the best ranking when the traffic data are aggregated into the three-month average. A good analogy is a four-day golf tournament: if a different player comes in first at each match, but you come in second at all four matches, you can end up winning the tournament.
What is Data Normalization?

Alexa’s ranking methodology corrects for a large number of potential biases and calculates the ranks accordingly. We normalize based on the geographic location of site visitors. We correct for biases in the demographic distribution of site visitors. We correct for potential biases in the data collected from our Alexa Toolbar to better represent those types of site visitors who might not use an Alexa Toolbar.
How are Movers & Shakers Calculated?

The movers and shakers list is based on changes in average reach (numbers of users). For each site on the net, we compute the average weekly reach and compare it with the average reach during previous weeks. The more significant the change, the higher the site will be on the list. The percent change shown on the Movers & Shakers list is based on the change in reach. It is important to note that the traffic rankings shown on the Movers & Shakers page are weekly traffic rankings; they are not the same as the three-month average traffic rankings shown in the other Alexa services and are not the same as the reach numbers used to generate the list.
Some Important Disclaimers

The traffic data are based on the set of toolbars that use Alexa data, which may not be a representative sample of the global Internet population. To the extent that our sample of users differs from the set of all Internet users, our traffic estimates may over- or under-estimate the actual traffic to any particular site.

In some cases traffic data may also be adversely affected by our “site” definitions. With tens of millions of hosts on the Internet, our automated procedures for determining which hosts are serving the “same” content may be incorrect and/or out-of-date. Similarly, the determinations of domains and home pages may not always be accurate.

Sites with relatively low traffic will not be accurately ranked by Alexa. Alexa’s data comes from a large sample of several million Alexa Toolbar users and other traffic data sources; however, the size of the Web and concentration of users on the most popular sites make it difficult to accurately determine the ranking of sites with fewer than 1,000 monthly visitors. Generally, traffic rankings of 100,000 and above should be regarded as not reliable. Conversely, the closer a site gets to #1, the more reliable its traffic ranking becomes.

Confirmation Emails: Make Them Work For You

Just a quick note that The Marketing Blog is on vacation this week. We'll provide a new post sometime this coming weekend or Monday, July 28th.

How to Make the Most of Order Confirmation and Ship Notification Emails

As the internet has evolved over time, marketing to customers via email has become more challenging. People and companies have implemented SPAM filters resulting in fewer messages being delivered to inboxes. When marketing emails are delivered, the messages still need to be opened. Email is obviously a cost effective way to market to existing customers.

This begs the question, "How can I get more existing customers to see my email marketing messages?" One way is to put marketing material into order confirmation emails and shipped notification emails (emails that are sent when orders are placed and shipped).

These types of emails have a tendency to get delivered more often. Much of the content is unique (order number, customer’s name, items purchased), making the email less likely to be flagged by a spam filter. Additionally, customers are likely to open these emails to confirm their order has the right contents or to see when a package might be delivered. It's a good medium to ask for an additional sale.

Should you decide to merchandise additional products in the email, consider putting them below the core data. For example, if a customer receives an email confirming his order, put the promotional copy and/or images below the invoice. Customers don't want to feel like they are being deceived when opening emails. Also, make sure the email addendum contains links so that it's easy for customer to get to the products that are being merchandised. Use clean crisp images that will pop and get the customer's attention.

It's an unfortunate fact of email marketing that fewer emails are reaching their intended recipients. However, merchants that seize the opportunity to market to their customers upon every touch point will have more success in generating repeat business.

Why White Papers Fail At Bringing In New Business

Do you use white papers in your marketing? Are you happy about the new business they help attract? Many marketing executives are disappointed at the results from white paper lead generation programs. In spite of their high cost and drain on company brain power, they often prove ineffective at bringing in new business.

Here Are 3 Main Reasons Your Lead Generating White Papers Aren't Working...

Reason #1: Preaching to the choir... By the time most prospects get your white paper in their hands, they're already convinced they have a problem that you might be able to help them solve it. A much bigger prospect base is the group of people who have problems that your offering can solve...but don't know about you or your solution yet. They need your help in "getting their head" around the problem and more fully understanding the implications of the problem continuing unchecked. This is a much more fertile hunting ground than prospects who have reached a well-formed conclusion about their problems.

Reason #2: Cradle to grave... Too many white papers attempt to over cover the subject at hand from "cradle to grave." This might be useful if you are going for a PhD in a subject area, but not so good if you want to connect with a harried executive with lots of problems to solve. Heck, the harried executive often isn't even sure what problem they are solving. Their first need is to more clearly understand what the problem might be. The "cradle to grave" approach usually gives them so much irrelevant information that they can't see the gem of your wisdom, even if it is in there!

Reason #3: Company focused instead of issue focused... Too many white papers boast! They push product features. In a typical complex offering (like software, capital equipment or high end services) there may be dozens to hundreds of features and capabilities.

What most white paper creators don't realize is that there are usually 2 to 5 key capabilities that make the difference for most of your prospects. Continuing to blather on about all the other features is like listening to a life insurance sales person gives you their 75 slide pitch. No wonder prospects go back to reading their other email!

Pay Attention to Where the Opportunity is... An effective white paper (paper, electronic or video) should be your primary business power tool for attracting new prospects into your sales cycle. If you fail to follow my advice, you will have a weakness in your sales lead generation process that will allow your competitors to easily plunder your revenue stream. It is at the very beginning of your complex sales cycle that you are most vulnerable. Better to make the front end "bullet-proof" so your best prospects get a clear and full look at your offering. Don't Play "Catch-up" When you have to track your prospect down in your competitor's sales cycle you are really on the ropes.

If you avoid the three main white paper pitfalls, you will bring in more prospects into your process. This new search tool is developed by former Google employees Tom Costello and Anna Patterson. Cuil.com claims to have already indexed 120 billion web pages which is three times more than any other search engine.

The new engine claims to combine web index with content-based relevance methods with results organized by ideas and offering complete user privacy. Cuil uses innovative search techniques by going beyond the contemporary approach of link analysis and traffic ranking. Instead, it analyzes the context of each page and the concepts behind each query. The latest search engine then organizes similar search results into groups and sorts them by category.

Moreover Cuil offers users additional features including tabs to clarify subjects, images to identify topics and search refining suggestions.

Cuil, pronounced as “Cool”, is ran by Tom Costello, Anna Patterson and Russell Power, who expertise in search engine, search index and led a web page rankinghttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PageRank . Costello researched and developed search engines at Stanford B-School-Isnt-What-It-Used-To-Be University and IBM; while Patterson and Power have worked with Google.

The Cuil search engine’s features include:

· Biggest Internet search engine—Cuil has indexed 120 billion Web pages, 3x more than any other search engine

· Organized results—Cuil’s magazine-style layout separates results by subject and allows further search by concept or category

· Different results—Unlike other search engines, Cuil ranks results by the content on each page, not its popularity

· Complete privacy protection—Cuil does not keep any personally identifiable information on users or their search histories

Sell More Online With A Professional Shopping Cart

In today's world, people expect to pay for products and services online. After spending money to get someone interested in your product and to your website, focusing on the purchase process can have the greatest benefit to your business.

I was absolutely shocked when I checked out a new client's website. He is an author who wants to sell more books. But he doesn't have an online shopping cart! He expects people to call his 800 number and give him their credit card number over the phone. He also asks people to send checks to his post office box. While both calls to action might seem normal, they are so 1980! People expect to pay online and for the purchase process to be quick and easy.

Here Are 7 Reasons to Use a Professional Online Shopping Cart Instead of An 800#

1. People live in dozens of different time zones. Do you want to answer the phone at 2 a.m. your time because someone in England is having her first cup of coffee and wants to order your product?

2. People shop on weekends. I don't know about you, but I'd rather be out in my kayak on a weekend than sitting by the phone waiting for a product order.

3. Telephone tag. Let's say you just appeared on a talk radio show and people are calling to order your product or service. They will get a busy signal since you can talk to only one person at a time. You'll find that you have to call back a dozen people. If this happens, you run the risk of playing telephone tag - and possibly never connecting with them.

4. Expensive phone charges. When you return phone calls, you risk paying long-distance rates including international phone calling rates. Your cost of taking the order just jumped through the roof.

5. Too much time, not enough money. When you take orders over the phone, you have to be nice. There's nothing wrong with being nice, but you have to engage people in a conversation: How's the weather? Where are you calling from? How long have you been interested in this topic? If you don't ask questions like this, people will think you are rude and might not want to buy your product! This all takes time.

6. When you only take order over the phone, you have to sell the person, not just take the order. Many companies are not comfortable selling on the phone. Or they are bad at asking for the order. You could blow the sale.

7. Too many mistakes. It is all too easy to misspell the person's name, mailing address or credit card number. I call this unintentional dyslexia. You think you typed in "54" and you said "54" to the client, but you really wrote "45."

If you had an online shopping cart, you'd solve all these problems! Add an online shopping cart to your website today and you will sell more products and services while protecting your time and energy. And, it's very easy to get started.

Make Your Search Campaign Successful

Search marketing is a great way to generate revenue and grow your business. However, many marketers fail at search and don't know it. The basic performance reports available from providers like Google can lead an advertiser to believe that his or her campaign is generating plenty of qualified interest, when the truth might be precisely the opposite.

Clicks, click-through rate and cost-per-click are the measuring sticks of most search campaigns, because they're the statistics most easily gleaned from online reports. Judging a campaign's performance by these standards is not only misleading, it can cause an advertiser to waste significant investment.

Why? Because a click is only one action — it doesn't measure what that prospect did when he or she clicked on your ad (that is, did he or she become a lead or buy your product) or even how qualified he or she is. Our experience tells us there are many advertisers who are content to generate thousands of clicks at considerable cost, but discover on further analysis that the vast majority of those clicks are completely worthless.

The perfect search campaign is one that:

■ generates a cost per acquisition (CPA) — whether your acquisition is a lead, download, registration or sale — competitive with other advertising vehicles

■ generates predictable CPA results at projected spend levels

■ is sufficiently expansive to cover every keyword or phase, and every variation that a qualified prospect could search on

■ delivers relevant ad copy for every keyword (to drive clicks) and maps to relevant landing pages (to drive conversions)

■ is designed in such a way that specific terms, groups of terms and campaigns are all optimized separately, with separate budgets, ad copy, geo-targeting and day-parting

■ is tracked through use of a back-end database or CRM system that measures ROI on a keyword-by-keyword basis.

Don't have all these metrics in place? No one does. The scenario above is the ideal program, and a hypothetical ideal at that. But you should use these standards as goals and benchmarks.

Know what you want to achieve. Are you trying to generate downloads, registrations, page views, sales leads, qualified leads or sales? How are you defining that goal — is someone filling out a registration form, hitting a particular page or meeting certain qualification criteria?

Your search campaign should measure how many of those desired actions are taking place; how much each desired action is costing in the aggregate; and, which keywords generate those actions at the lowest cost.

Marketing Through Admission

Use the proven power of 'the damaging admission' while promoting and selling your products and services to gain the trust of your prospects.

In the mid eighties, researchers at Cleveland State University made an astonishing discovery. The researchers created two fictitious job candidates, Dave and John. For each of them they created identical resumes and two almost identical letters of reference. The ONLY difference was that John's letter included this sentence: 'Sometimes, John can be a little difficult to get along with.' The researchers showed the resumes to personnel directors.

Guess which applicant the directors most wanted to interview? Believe it or not, the answer is John. The researchers concluded that the criticism of John made the rest of the reference far more believable.

Many savvy marketers have long understood the power of the 'damaging admission'. The damaging admission is where the seller points out the flaws of what they are offering. Few products, services or offers are perfect and most prospects can't help but wonder, 'What's the hidden catch?'

So if you take it upon yourself to let your prospects know up front what the weaknesses or limitations of what you are offering, you accomplish several things. First, by announcing upfront the limitations of your product service or idea, it stops your prospect from attempting to uncover those limitations for himself. Secondly, it lends credibility to everything else you have to say about your product or service. After all, if you're honest enough to admit the weaknesses and flaws of what you're offering, it stands to reason that all the positive things you have to say are true too. Finally, it can actually draw your prospects attention.

Who can resist paying attention to the sentence that starts, 'I shouldn't be telling you this, but..'? Cosmetics company Lush have long understood the power of the 'damaging admission'. Next to their product descriptions they include positive and negative comments from customers. Hence a shampoo that features rave reviews from some customers, may also be accompanied by comments from others such as 'smells like coal tar'. Kind of refutes the idea that the positive testimonials are manufactured doesn't it?

Here's another example of a damaging admission, taken from one of my own products: 'If you're determined to find a catch, there is one major flaw that you should know about. This programm won't pick up the phone and make the calls for you! You'll still have to pick up the phone and dial!'

What stops most people from making the 'damaging admission' is that they're afraid that by showing a weakness they'll lose the sale. In actual fact, the reverse is true. You're far more likely to win your customers' trust and respect if you admit the flaws of what you are offering.

Reputation Management Made Easy: 7 Effective Ways For Managing Your Reputation Online

Have you Googled your name recently? Today, more than ever, individuals are turning to the web to learn more about people they meet, interview, and simply want to know more about. With information being so pervasive, managing your reputation is more important than ever.

How to Manage Your Reputation Online

Fortunately, managing your reputation online isn't all that difficult, but it does take work. Here are 7 basic steps you can take to ensure that your reputation doesn't become negatively impacted by what's being said about you online.

1. See where you stand. Start your reputation management initiative by Googling your name. Try it with quotes and with out (first and last name together). Look through each of your results on page one and page two of Google. Are there any there are are negative or you wish to remove?

2. Set up a Google alert. Visit Google and set up an alert for your name. After setting up the alert Google will send you and email to confirm that you wish to receive the updates. Accept the alert and each time your name is published to the Web, you'll know about it.

3. Contact website owners for name removal. If there are sites that include your name and commentary that is less than desireable, contact the appropriate websites requesting that the information be removed. More often than not, website owners will agree to remove your name and/or inappropriate information.

4. Purchase a domain with your name. Add sites and webpages associated with your name and watch negative search results get pushed lower on Google rankings. Visit GoDaddy or another provider of website URLs and hosting, and purchase a domain that contains your name. Even if your name is rather common, experiment with variations until your name can be established in the form of a dot com. Once you own a domain, publish a webpage with your personal profile.

5. Start a blog under your name. Blogger is a great tool for setting up your own blog which can be used to publish information about yourself. Popular blog sites are often picked up by Google and you can control the content. Be sure to sign up for Technorati after your blog has been published. Submit your blog for review and its popularity will increase, improving search rankings and continuing to push down negative search results.

6. Free press release. Use free-press-release.com or a similar free press release site to publish favorable information about your and your reputation. This form of reputation management is easy and costs nothing. Be sure to use your name throughout the release and in the release title.

7. Author articles in your field. Publish article relative to a particular topic or area in which you've done some work or have experience. Use article distribution serivces to build online references to your content. Make sure your articles contain an about the author section that links back to your main website.

There are a variety of strategies you can use to manage online references about you, your family, or others that need to manage their reputation online. Other online sites like Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, YouTube, and Squidoo, offer ample opportunity to deliver favorable search results that can push unfavorable results down in search engine rankings. The key is to start today - proactively manage your reputation and put yourself in a favorable light.

Local Search: What You Need to Know

For small businesses and retail establishments, local search can have a favorable impact. Marketing to customers in your neighborhood used to be as easy as putting up a sign or advertising in the local newspaper. But today's web-savvy consumers shop for products and services locally on the Internet using local search.

Using a local search engine, marketers can target customers in a specific area while maximizing their marketing investment. They can use specific targeting, using the right keywords and search phrases to pull customers to their site and front door.

Local search offers low cost, relevant advertising dynamics, an audit trail to measure results and opportunities to increase revenues and profit. The key is partnering with a local search company that provides relevant search results, so your customers can find you easily. They should provide high-quality location data, geo-targeted advertising and efficient search algorithms.

Here are five reasons you should use local search:

It is on the rise The local search marketplace is expanding. Local search is estimated to grow to a $6.2 billion market opportunity by 2010. (Kelsey Group). According to ComScore, 47% of local searchers contacted or visited a local merchant as a result of their online search.

There's money to be made It's been proven that “local” searchers convert into buyers.

According to industry analysts, approximately 80% of an individual's income is spent within about 50 miles of their home. With 95% of the potential local search advertising market today remaining untouched, this is a huge opportunity for businesses.

Online advertising just makes (dollars and) sense

In today's economy, more local companies are turning to online advertising as a new way to capture greater local customer revenue. At the same time, many Internet players are refocusing on local search as a method of increasing revenue and profit. (Mike Dobson, president of TeleMapics).

Local search costs less and delivers more

One of the reasons that local search attracts new advertising customers is that it offers relatively precise targeting capabilities, at one of the lowest costs per lead offered by any advertising medium (29 cents, according to Piper Jaffray & Co.). It also offers an audit trail.

Your customers can find you faster

Traffic has declined for traditional print publishers, as it is easier and quicker to research a buying opportunity online than to search print media. In the Yellow Pages arena, the market has fragmented because of increased competition between publishers, diluting the effectiveness of Yellow Pages advertising that many small businesses once relied upon.

If you haven't considered local search as an important part of your marketing program, now is the time to do so. You'd be surprised at what an impact you can make!

Making the Most of Your Click-Through Rates

Click through rate continues to be a key metric for Internet marketers. However, the question "What’s a good click-through rate?” is a little bit like asking “What’s your favorite movie?" Truthfully, it really comes down to personal preference. Just as some people might lean toward an adventure film as their favorite movie, others might prefer something from another genre.

The same is true for click-through rates on your Sponsored Search ads: The highest possible click-through rate may work for some—but it doesn’t work for all. That’s why the honest answer to the question is, “It depends.”

Click-through rates are naturally going to vary from campaign to campaign, and even from keyword to keyword. Everything involved in the way your ad is displayed plays a part, from your ad copy to the ad’s ranking on the results page.

This being the case, your click-through rate should really be viewed as only one indicator of your ad’s performance. It’s best to try and balance your evaluation of those rates with a just-as-critical look at your conversion rates (number of clicks converting into sales or other actions you want people to take). While it might be easy to generate a bump in your clicks, you also want those extra clicks convert into sales.

An ideal click-through rate provides the best possible return on investment, and to achieve that, it’s important to consider these factors:

1. Competition

Are your keywords fighting for clicks? Generic keywords, such as “dvd,” tend to have a lot of competition, which lessens the chance of getting clicks. More specific keywords, such as “transformers dvd,” generally have less competition and a greater chance for clicks.

2. Position

An ad with a high ranking may generate more traffic to your web site. To help attain a good position in search results, keep your bids competitive and your ad quality high.

3. Ad Quality

Are your ads relevant? Do they contain the related keywords? Do they reflect the offering of your site in a way that will appeal to users? And do they include any competitive advantages you offer that might set you apart from your competitors?

4. Ad Testing

Create multiple versions of your ads and use ad testing to determine which ad works best. Vary your ad offerings, as well as your display URLs, to see what gets the best results.

5. Identifying Low-Performing Keywords

Compare the click-through rate of similar keywords, to see if any are significantly under performing in relation to the others. If so, consider moving those low-performing keywords to a different ad group and creating new, highly relevant ads for those keywords.

There really is no hard and fast rule as to how high a click-through rate should be. But if your ads are compelling and your click-through and conversion rates are well balanced, you’re off to a great start.

More on Search Engine Marketing

I'd like to thank everyone for their feedback on posts related to Search Engine Marketing. I hear from so many people who are spending money on Google Adwords and not seeing results that I've made today's post about how you can make the most of your search engine marketing.

When I started out in search marketing, I was experiencing the same thing. It seems that I could never get ahead. I might spend more but the revenue I generated for products and services simply covered my costs. Feeling a bit defeated, I called Google and eventually met with a representative to help me better understand how I might improve my results.

Believe it or not, the answer was quite simple. New ad copy, new ad groups, and keywords. You may be saying to yourself, isn't that just more the of the same? Well, yes and no. There certainly are lessons to be learned about writing your ads, analyzing your ads, and choosing the right keywords, and it can make all the difference.

Here are the most valuable lessons I learned when seeking to improve your benefit to cost ratio for Google Adwords:

1. Use initial caps when writing your ads. This ads credibility and helps your click through rate.

2. Put the starting price in your ads. Since price is usually the one factor that may influence purchase, putting price in your ad ensures that price is not an issue and buyers are qualified.

3. Break your ads up into multiple ad groups. Doing so allows for better tracking and experimentation. Over time, deactivate ads that do not produce the conversion rates you're looking for (Track EVERY ad with Google Conversion Tracking).

4. Create a long list of keywords and analyze which perform the best. Make sure your list is exhaustive and eliminate those that don't perform.

5. Add negative keywords. A great one is "free". Often times, individuals looking for free stuff aren't willing to pay for products or services. Learn more about negative keywords and this should eliminate much of the cost associated with unproductive clicks.

These are just a few of the strategies I've used for myself and for client to ensure that clicks generate profitable revenue. You should always be working on both sides of the equation. That is to say focus on reducing clicks that don't convert and improve conversion rates with better, more targeted ads.

Although we didn't discuss it here, you should also be focused on improving conversion rates through landing page tests. Change-up your landing pages and see if you can enhance conversion rates once someone has clicked through. This can result in a significant improvement in overall conversions and revenue.

Web hosting

Whether you are a webmaster or online ecommerce seller or want to be a reseller of web hosting, we have found a perfect blog for you that contain all the information of different web hosting that can be availed.
